A few words...Though many screen plays had been filmed before, Raja Harishchandra is generally referred to as India's first feature film. After seeing a movie on the life of Christ the Brahmin Phalke decided to bring Indian mythology to the screen and thus became the father of Indian cinema.

  • Since Dadasaheb Phalke could not find women, who were willing to act in a film, the role of Taramati was played by a young boy named Salunke. D. D. Dabke played the role of the King Harishchandra.
  • Of the 4 reels of Raja Harishchandra 2 have survived. If you want to see a short scene of the movie, watch the VHS "Bollywood and Beyond" of the bfi (ISBN 1-903786-08-8).
