| A few words... | After director Shekhar Kapur had made his great film Masoom in the middle cinema and delivered a Bollywood hit with Mr. India he once again changed his style. Bandit Queen is based on the true story of Phoolan Devi. Being a lower cast girl Phoolan Devi was married off as a little girl and repeatedly raped as a child. As an adult she joined a gang of dacoits and became their leader. She took revenge on her village and her husband and became an idol of the lower castes. In 1983 she was imprisoned and released in 1994. She founded a political party and was a member of parliament until a relative of a former victim of hers assassinated her in 2001. Kapur's film was shown in Cannes. In India it took the film another two years to be released by the censorship board. After a few months the film was banned again. |
