Kareena Kapoor debuted in 2000 with Refugee. In 2001 she became famous with her role of Pooja "Poo" Sharma in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. In the same year she played another role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Asoka. Kareena tried more serious roles with prolific directors. She acted in Mani Ratnam's Yuva and made her best appearance in her career so far in Govind Nihalani's Dev. Another attempt was Sudhir Mishra's Chameli, but the credits for acting all went to Rahul Bose. For most of the critics Kareena in the role of a prostitute was not convincing. This year she acted in the thriller 36 China Town and the Don remake.
Kareena is an offspring of the famous Kapoor family, who have been working on the top of the film industry ever since Kareena's great grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor joined the movies back in the silent era. Her father Randhir Kapoor, one of the sons of Raj Kapoor, and her mother Babita were well known in the 1960s and 1970s and her sister Karishma Kapoor acted in many big hits of the 1990s.
