Shaji N. Karun is one of the most important contemporary Malayalam film makers. He graduated from the FTII and earned a lot of recognition as the cinematographer for many films of Kerala's most important director G. Aravindan. After making a number of short films, Karun debuted as a director with the Malayalam movie Piravi. Both of his two following films Swaham and Vaanaprastham were shown in the official selection of the prestigious Cannes film festival. His last release was a Hindi movie titled Nishad, which deals with the time before the 1971 war between India and Pakistan.
